Food plots are one of the most revolutionary tools that hunters use to attract deer to their properties. However, it seems that whenever you put trail cameras on food plots to monitor the deer activity, nearly all of the pictures of the big bucks occur at night. Don’t get me wrong, plenty of big bucks have been killed over food plots, but if I had the choice between creating a food plot and creating cover, I’ll create cover every time.

Hunters harvested a total of 13,757 deer in 2012, up more than 13 percent from the year before. The department estimated there would be an increase in number of deer in 2012 due to a mild winter and a reduction in the number of muzzleloader season antlerless deer permits issued in 2011. In response, the number of antlerless permits was increased by 30 percent in 2012.

Although running and gunning is a great strategy when turkeys are vocal, when they are silent, it’s a great way to inadvertently scare birds. Regardless, mapping the areas turkeys use frequently and recording the time they use those areas can pay off big on the days when they’re silent. Although, I rarely see turkey hunters recording their observations in a notebook, I have noticed that most turkey hunters do carry their cell phones with them.

Big Game Logic (BGL) was originally created to help hunters to pattern deer using field observations and trail camera data. Throughout the process of patterning “Notable” deer for my graduate research, we have been adding trail camera data to our BGL camp map. We do not record data from every picture; rather we only record data from pictures of deer with collars and/or ear tags. If the same deer is in a series of pictures, we only enter data from the first picture in the series because we only want know the time the deer first appeared at the darting site.

In my previous article, I mentioned that I am using Big Game Logic to pattern and possibly recapture a few study animals for my graduate research. After a couple weeks of running trail cameras at bait stations, we have identified numerous marked animals, and patterns are starting to emerge. We even had a close encounter with a collared doe, but she did not get close enough for a shot. We need deer within 20 yards to dart them. Unfortunately, animals that have been previously darted are very nervous around bait piles, so we have our work cut out for us. Hopefully we will intercept at least a few of the individuals in the “hit list” below. Wish us luck and stand-by for updates!

One of the features that BGL has that makes it so valuable is called a “Notable.” This feature was originally created so you could name and pattern specific deer. However, a “Notable” does not need to be a deer. It can be anything you want to keep track of, both critter and non-critter alike. For example, if you want to keep track of coyote activity on your property, you can create a notable called “Coyotes.” You can then enter sightings and trail camera observations to your camp map, and tag them as the notable “Coyotes.”

This is the start of a series of tips designed to help you use BGL to its maximum potential. Many of the basic tools that BGL offers are similar to the tools biologists use when analyzing data for animal behavior studies. Several of the techniques I will discuss are used by wildlife professionals and professional hunters to pattern animals.

I’m going to share with you one of the most valuable tools you can add to your hunting arsenal this year, and it’s FREE! Biggamelogic.com (BGL) is best described as a mapping program, hunting journal, data organizer, and social network all rolled into one package. Though it sounds complex, the website is actually pretty “user friendly.” BGL basically gives hunters the same tools that biologists use to create basic home range maps and sort through data to discover important patterns. As a hunter with a strong background in biology, I recognize that such tools are EXTREMELY valuable for hunters!

Big Game Logic allows you to predict future deer movement based on the data you post to your camp now. Some of the most important data you can post are deer sightings from your hunts and off-season scouting. You can post these sightings using interactive maps within your camps. You can track all sightings on the map whether they are sightings from a hunt or from images you have captured on trail cameras. And, as with all other camp information, deer sighting data is private and can only be seen by camp members.

Just a couple of items I want to highlight to make sure every understands:
- All camp info is private to only camp members that are invited. Nobody outside of the camp can view anydata inside of your camp, including map, stands etc..., unless you allow them. This is of course for Closed and Private camps as dictated from your camp creation.
- You can immediately start adding sightings and trail cam photos from the past and track weather conditions. So don't wait for current hunts to start loading data. Enter trail cam photos and journal inforamtion from past years to populate the outdoor database. Weather conditions will be accurate for up to 4 years in the past.
Happy Hunting!!
Note: I just added a forum topic under BGL News and Notes titled Questions???. Please feel free to ask any questions in regards to the site and we will respond as soon as we get the chance.
