Almost any hunter will tell you that scent control is the most important aspect of hunting. Your scent control efforts can be the deciding factor that determines whether or not you shoot a deer. This is especially true for bow hunters because in order for archers to get a quality shot at a deer, they have to draw the deer in closer than what a gun hunter would have to. This, of course, isn’t to say that gun hunters don’t have to worry about scent control at all. The whitetail deer can smell between 150 and 200 yards away so no hunter can afford to ignore the basics of scent control.
The most difficult part about scent control is the fact that there are so many
products on the market for it. Whether you are trying to cover up your scent or trying to lure the deer in with an attractant, you’ll find that there are a lot of options out there.
You can buy deodorant gum, scent-free hand lotion, earth-scented shampoo, odorless lip balm and toothpaste, unscented dryer sheets, and a multitude of various scent-eliminating sprays, wipes, drips, dispensers, gels, wafers, and powders. It can get to be overwhelming.
My boyfriend and I were shopping at
Cabela’s® last weekend when this exact topic arose. One of our friends works there so we stopped to talk to him in the scent aisle. As we were talking, a customer approached him and asked him what he thought was the best product for scent control. Our friend did his best to keep his opinion out of his answer by telling the man which products had been selling the most lately.

My boyfriend and I joined the conversation and told the man that we have been using Wildlife Research Center's
Scent Killer® spray for years. Our friend said he had heard a lot of people had been coming into the store talking about how much they liked Dead Down Wind’s new
Evolve3 ScentPrevent™ field spray.
For some reason, my boyfriend and I have never considered switching scent eliminators even though we have been winded on several occasions. We hang all of our clothes outside when we aren’t hunting, and we dress outside before each hunt, making sure to spray ourselves down with each layer of clothing. Somehow, especially this season, we still manage to get winded in the stand. Maybe it was time to try a new brand of spray.
Evolve3 ScentPrevent™ is Dead Down Wind's newest product line that is said to "prevent and terminate a broader spectrum of odor molecules including human, smoke, gas, and other synthetic contaminant odors". Dead Down Wind also says the sprayer uses an inverted technology that allows you to spray product even when the bottle is upside down.
We bought a bottle of the Evolve 3 ScentPrevent™ and used it for our next hunt. We didn’t change anything else in our routine, but this time we weren’t winded by a doe that came below our blind. We weren’t sure if it was the spray that had helped us or if there was another factor, so we decided to keep trying it out. It only took a few more outings for us to realize that the spray was indeed covering our scent. We had several does and an occasional young buck come within 20 yards of our stand and stic

k their noses in the air. We thought for sure they were going to smell us because the wind was in their favor, and this is almost always a sign of a ruined hunt. But instead, they sniffed, twitched their noses, and went back to eating or continued walking.
And, not only does it seem to eliminate our scent, the sprayer really does work well when the bottle is upside down. This is something that Scent Killer® scores low on. It is almost impossible to spray the product if the bottle is not perfectly upright. It's a small inconvenience, but it can cause frustration quickly. It's extremely important to me to approach the hunt with as little initial frustration as possible. Like anything else, if you go into a hunt with a bad mood, more things are likely to go wrong, and you are less likely to have a successful hunt.
My boyfriend and I still use Scent Killer® because we have a lot of it left and it’s still a good product. However, from now on, we will be using Dead Down Wind to spray down our last couple layers of clothing and our other gear before the hunt. As Dead Down Wind promises, the Evolve3 ScentPrevent™ field spray is our last line of defense against any scent we may acquire before and during the hunt.
