To begin telling the saga of my 2012 Wisconsin buck I have to go back a ways. In July of this past year my band traveled to the small town of Viroqua Minnesota to play a music festival at the town’s county fairgrounds. It was at this festival that my band’s Emcee mentioned from on stage that I am an avid hunter with a passion for the type of country we were in at that time. As we were shootin’ the breeze with fans after our set an older gentlemen approached me and started talking to me about hunting.

Going into the 2012 season I have to admit I was not nearly as prepared as I have been in years past. Moving from Suburban Milwaukee down to Kenosha had really ruined my preseason shooting rituals and routines. Graduating from Marquette, moving out into the real world, and starting my career as a Clinical laboratory scientist seemed to overshadow my usual focus on the upcoming season. I had run trail cameras all summer and had a pretty solid pattern down thanks to the mapping software here on Big Game Logic, but my form was average at best heading into the final week before season.

Early Season: Tactics and Philosophies

If you’re anything like me, the management and ability to hunt large-antlered deer fills your dreams on a nightly basis. Age, genetics, and nutrition are the three key factors that affect the growth potential of any buck. Given the size of most hunting lands, very few “weekend warrior” land managers can ever gain access to enough property to manage genetics or age properly. However, nutritional supplementation even on five acres is one of the simplest ways to improve herd health and hunting potential. The ease of this management tool is often overlooked by outdoorsman but where legal can benefit all games species on the property. In this blog I will address the benefits of mineral for antler growth and overall herd health followed by how I personally utilize mineral sites (where legal) as an effective scouting and hunting strategy.

Product Review: Bowfinger 2.0 Camera Mount

By Pro Staffer Ian Eckerstorfer

Just came across a great product for beginner hunters looking to start filming that don’t necessarily want to break the bank in the process.
The Bowfinger 2.0 is a great way to record the hunt of a life time and share footage with friends and family for years to come. The camera mount system can attach either into the threads for your stabilizer or anywhere on your riser with the mount. A simple camcorder like a Kodak play sport or a GoPro is easily attached to the Bowfinger 2.0.

Shed Hunting: Another Deer Season

By Ian Eckerstorfer

Over the past few years, I have become fond of the season between seasons in the deer woods known as “shed season.” As many of my friends and family can attest I’ve become pretty serious when it comes to looking for and finding shed antlers here in South Eastern Wisconsin. In the time after late bow closes and before turkey season begins getting out and putting in some miles on the boots is a great remedy for cabin fever. In this blog I will share some tips I have learned over the years and the benefits of searching your local hunting grounds for shed antlers.

A Tale of Two Farms
By Ian Eckerstorfer Suburban Standout Outdoors

In the summer of 2011, my excitement was at an all-time high. I finally had pictures and trail camera video of a metro unit Boone and Crocket. “Jolly Green Giant”, as he was named roams “Greenfield” farm. From the road the Greenfield doesn’t look like much, but to a bow hunter it was a dream. A thick fence line runs between a marshy pine bedding area and a hardwood ridge, with alfalfa and soybeans on either side. My stand hung at the intersection of two line fences that formed a great funnel.

Going into the 2011 deer season I knew things were going to be different. With a full schedule of classes slated to start in August and my first consistent part-time job, I was going to have to earn my stripes as a true weekend warrior. It also meant I needed to ramp up preparations to give myself as much of an edge as possible.

Late Season Whitetail: A Crash Course

By Ian Eckerstorfer

With the rut a distance memory and the orange army on leave until next season, the deer woods are pretty worked over by the time late archery opens. However, the last few years in December and January I’ve taken numerous deer with my bow. When the conditions are right late archery can be even better than the rut. Strategies for hunting late season whitetails can be simple at times but execution of a sound game plan is key. Food sources, effective scouting, along with timing and set up are all crucial elements of successful late season bow hunting.
